Grand unified boot loader

As is my habit, I was tweaking my ubuntu laptop and I deleted one unused partition. Then I continued working on the system. After I while I turned off laptop and went to TV. Coming back, I realized my system won't boot. Leave along booting, it was not even showing boot menu - the grub menu. Instead it was going to some grub rescue. Grub is a program which shows the OS options when you switch on the system. Yes, it is called grand unified boot loader. But currently it was not able to find the partition. After some googling, I came to know that I should find out the partition in which grub is present using ls command, then insmod something called "normal" and then execute normal command. And it worked, I did get back my boot loader. And hence could boot the system. So I keep thinking about this, many people like me may post the question about grub rescue, but who has the time, inclination and dedication to answer these? But there are. There are plenty of good Sam...

You need infinite rupees

Nowadays, I am being amused by bugs in my own programs. Infinity indeed!! That is why you should know the difference between int division and float division.

Never update

We read in our school about Budhdha -that his first preaching is "Aseye dukhkhakke mUla"  Greed is the root cause of all misery. How true. I was happily coding in my newly found ubuntu android. And browsing as well ( browsing more and coding less). Then an idea struck me. Remember the good old days where we had window-ish pull down menu for all programs in a Linux system. Now even windows does not have pull down menus. So I came across an article about how to install that 'classic' gnome menu in ubuntu. Yes, I want that menu. Because current dash system lets us search for programs. How do we search when we don't know the name (or don't know what we are searching for). So I installed it. And while at it, I even updated firefox. Since many many years, my paronoidism, paranoidy or rather paranoia has a major entry - update. Remember the days when you were informed that "now windows will update. Do not switch off" and the screen will freeze for ...

Enable

I was and am tired of my windows laptop. Things start disappearing from time to time and I am unable to bring them back. Few months back it was network indicator. Why do I need indicators? Because I need to be disconnected almost always. Because I am paranoid surrounded by unfriendly wifi connections of some unfriendly, almost hostile people. So I thought let me buy a ubuntu system and live happily ever after with that system.  Happily ever after is not written in my kismet. When I first bought the system, sound was not working. Then lan connection was not working and next wifi was not working. Windows tweaking is simple - relatively. You just enable and disable some services. At the most you may need to use registry editor. Or worst case scenario, factory reset fixes the problem. You may need to install all software all over again.. But ubuntu is different. Users of this system are supposedly geeks. So if you have fever, ubuntu gives you an anatomy book and asks you to fix ...

Out of the frying pan to fire

I thought I am spending more time in system recovery and factory reset and services, and very less time in aapt and adb. And of course the culprit is the universally hated  but universally used operating system - Windows.. So I spent a lot of money and bought an ubuntu laptop. Now I am spending all my time in firefox followed by sudo apt-get's. If the MS product treats us as toddlers, this OS treats us as Einsteins. And Dell which has so many Linux products should have guessed by now, that some simple apps should come pre-installed.  I had to install cheese for webcam. I failed in installing sound. Now you can imagine my plight with IDE.  Any ways, more opportunity to learn the OS only developers use. Yay me!!

Tired

मज़धार में नैय्या डोले, तो माँझी पार लगाये माँझी जो नाव डुबोये उसे कौन बचाये   I am really tired. Tired of other things and most important of all, laptop problems. Yes, my laptop again gave a problem and am still unable to fix it since yesterday night. My computer - all my computers, previous desktop, laptop and current laptop give me so much problem that I can factory reset them even in my dream. Is it bad karma? Have I hurt any computers in my previous life? But in my previous life there were no computers.  I thought I would write a tell-all post either in fictious form or simple bloggy form. I even imagined all the people I will blame and in what words. But all my life, I have done things to prove the world wrong - unsuccessfully each time. Never have I done things for my own life. OK, let me change it. Let the others - if there are such people  get the satisfaction of causing me terrible times. Begining of this month I have set the OS to factory conditi...

साया

I was thinking of just posting two lines from an old hindi song वख्त इन्सान पे ऐसा भी कभी आता है राह मी छोड के साया भी चला जाता है And to accompany that I imagined I would draw a human figure with lot of wounds and some red color here and there and surrounded by arrows. (I did not draw because I can not. I can not draw on computer nor on paper) But what is the context? Remember I crashed our computer . A computer technician came and spent two days and spent 1200 rupees (our) and repaired the computer. Now , the anti virus can not scan and programs would not install and to top it all, our computer is a work station with local ip address as 0.0.0.0. I as usual googled and typed commands, googled and typed commands and deleted files and stopped processes , to no avail. The end result was internet stopped working. Another technician, this time from BSNL came and told the modem is not functioning properly and temporarily replaced the modem with another which does not have...
