Travelling in a metro

We are all standing in a row on the start line, hands on accelerator. On our vehicles. The moment signal turns orange, the accelerator goes to maximum and all vehicles start zooming ahead. The only thing we see is the road ahead like Arjuna seeing only fish's eye.

Well, this is not the scene from a bike racing. It is everyday race which happens on Bangalore roads. But unlike actual races we don't try to hurt our opponents. Actual racers don't do that either, you say? OK, I mistook the computer racing game for real.

But effort to hurt anyway is very much present here too. In the form of pot holes. We are speeding as we want to make up for the delay caused at the signal. Then "Dhad". We land in a pothole which is as big as a well. (may be it is brahut bengaluru mahanagara palike's way of rain water harvesting!). If we don't fall down, we are lucky. If we see this pothole ahead and try to escape from it and suddenly turn, we are sure to collide with the person coming behind.

Ok, thus we travel hardly for 5 minutes and here comes the next signal. But this time we are behind a sea of vehicles. So we try squeeze from the left of four wheelers , from the right , from wherever possible and go and stand on the start line. We have not yet tried going through these vehicles. But don't you think we can go on(top of) these vehicles, as shown in movies. This method will even let us cross the signal without being caught by policeman. Great!!!

We dislike four wheelers, our hatred growing proportionally with their size. (And the feeling is mutual) Cars are bad enough, they go so slowly blocking our way. BMTC buses are the worst. They go very slow but they know it is their right to go on right. Right side of the road. We humble two wheelers either must go behind them in a snail pace or overtake them from the left. Then suddenly these buses stop, bringing the traffic to halt. Then they come back to their right full place on the road completely unseeing the vehicles on the path. So we not only have escape from potholes, we have to escape from buses too.

How I wish we could go back to the age, where we walk all the way to office through calm and quite woods.

Hair care and me ??

I delayed writing this post for I was not sure whether I am entitled to write this post. If I put my photo along, I should also add that I do not use Dove shampoo, so that it will serve as a warning to people , if they don't use a proper shampoo, their hair might also look like mine :-( :-( :-( Things (on my head) were not this bad always. I had long black and reasonably thick hair, nicely plaited, when I was a child. In fact I would be sitting on my plaits - they were so long. And to top it all, one of relatives used to say " you say you will be taller and your hair will say it will be longer" or something like that. (Now I have ended up 5.2 ft  and my hair also short sob....) Back then, how did I nourish my hair?I did not do much in fact. But mere paas maa thi. She would religiously oil my hair - everyday. But not soak my head in oil. She would just put half a teaspoon of oil to my head. Then brush my hair nicely and put 2 tight plaits before sending me to school. T...

Danuvettiddu

We Hegdes from Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Shimoga districts of Karnataka belong to a brahmin sub sect called Havyaka Brahmins. We have some traditions of our own, a language of our own - which is slightly different from kannada. But I am not an authority on the subject, nor have I read any book on comparative analysis of Karnataka brahmin traditions. And as most modern secular Hindus I find it more amusing to make fun of our traditions rather than celebrating them - may be because I do not understand it completely. I attended a marriage yesterday. So let us talk about few of rituals in this marriage ceremony. On the previous day of the marriage called Naandi - which means beginning of any good thing. The groom will wear a simple dress, and a wooden footwear (since we can't conjure up wooden paduka so easily, he will wear foot-wear made from dried skin of areca flower) and with a sack on his shoulder, will declare that  he will go to Kashi. Here he is saying, he wants to...
