Money, money, money

There was a king.   He used to disguise himself and wander during night times. One day he saw a hut, which was completely empty. There was a man there in old and worn out clothes sleeping on the floor. He was a personification of poverty. But still he was sleeping like a child, without a care in the world.

The king came to his palace. He was upset and jealous. He, the king has everything. He sleeps in one of the softest beds, maids fan him entire night. But still, he is unable to sleep. And this poor man, has nothing and still he gets blissful sleep every night.

Next night, kings again comes to poor man's hut, wakes him up and whispers to him. " Here is bag of gold coins. Take it and be happy". So he gives a bag of gold coins and leaves.

The poor man goes from shock to excitement to fear to happiness. He is so thrilled. But also worried. What if some thief steals it away. He digs a hole in the floor, hides the gold coin bag there. Then he removes the bag, counts the coins, puts it back again and lies down thinking about nothing but gold.

This continues every day. Day time the man works as laborer. But night he removes the gold coins, counts them, keeps them back. Again removes and counts and so on.

Many of us know this story. But we do not realize how true it is.

I was like that poor man. I used to look at my online earnings - be it from my blogs or my programs. Smile and say my total earning is two dollars. Two dollars was just a number seen in the laptop. And I was happy.

Then I added advertisement to one of my apps. And my revenue shot to ten dollars first day. I was thrilled, enthralled and so on. Then advertisement revenue starting coming down as seven, four, three and one. Now I am waking up at unearthly hours, looking at my advertisement income and surfing how to increase this revenue and so on.  And my mind keeps screaming "You have worked so much for it, you deserve better" and my other mind is saying "It is ok, you are not living in hut and you do not have to worry about where your next meal is coming from".

So same story, different circumstances.

Hair care and me ??

I delayed writing this post for I was not sure whether I am entitled to write this post. If I put my photo along, I should also add that I do not use Dove shampoo, so that it will serve as a warning to people , if they don't use a proper shampoo, their hair might also look like mine :-( :-( :-( Things (on my head) were not this bad always. I had long black and reasonably thick hair, nicely plaited, when I was a child. In fact I would be sitting on my plaits - they were so long. And to top it all, one of relatives used to say " you say you will be taller and your hair will say it will be longer" or something like that. (Now I have ended up 5.2 ft  and my hair also short sob....) Back then, how did I nourish my hair?I did not do much in fact. But mere paas maa thi. She would religiously oil my hair - everyday. But not soak my head in oil. She would just put half a teaspoon of oil to my head. Then brush my hair nicely and put 2 tight plaits before sending me to school. T...

Danuvettiddu

We Hegdes from Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Shimoga districts of Karnataka belong to a brahmin sub sect called Havyaka Brahmins. We have some traditions of our own, a language of our own - which is slightly different from kannada. But I am not an authority on the subject, nor have I read any book on comparative analysis of Karnataka brahmin traditions. And as most modern secular Hindus I find it more amusing to make fun of our traditions rather than celebrating them - may be because I do not understand it completely. I attended a marriage yesterday. So let us talk about few of rituals in this marriage ceremony. On the previous day of the marriage called Naandi - which means beginning of any good thing. The groom will wear a simple dress, and a wooden footwear (since we can't conjure up wooden paduka so easily, he will wear foot-wear made from dried skin of areca flower) and with a sack on his shoulder, will declare that  he will go to Kashi. Here he is saying, he wants to...
