Shikari by Chittal

The main theme of the book 'Shikari' is fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear of vague past.

Nagappa is R and D manager in large chemical factory. Having lost his parents in an early age, he has struggled a lot, but has come up in life due to his hard work and intelligence.

One fine day suddenly he finds himself suspended from his job. The reason given is that he might be involved in the fire accident which occurred in the factory. And he is asked to go on a leave for a month.

An introvert by nature, he is in a turmoil. Along with external problems, he keeps remembering about how his back and stomach were burnt when his shirt catches fire. He doubts the fire might not be accident, but his father might have tried to kill him. He does not know why his father committed suicide and why and how his sister disappeared. His entire childhood is  a fuzzy but scary memory which keeps terrorizing him.

He is very conscious about the burn marks on his body, so never removes his shirt.

Add to this scenario two villains Srinivas and Firoz. Srinivas is his childhood friend and owns a printing press. He is very angry about Nagappa since he wrote a story about Srinivas's mother. And he is afraid, Nagappa may write Netravati - the girl Srinivas had an affair but declined to marry, as a result of which she committed suicide.  Also Srinivas now rich and famous does not want his people to know about his humble background and this one mistake.

Firoz is DMD of the office and always find faults with Nagappa. But now he is in a financial scandal and thinks of making our hero the scape goat.

How these two come together to destroy our Nagappa is really great.

But when he realizes the driving force of these two is also fear, he becomes strong. Not because he plans to exploit this fear, because now he does not care about anything, neither for his job nor for his status among relatives.

What makes us cry for Nagappa is every time he gets his courage back, some other betrayal is waiting for him.

Do read the book.

ಏನಾದರೂ ಆಗು ಮೊದಲು ಮಾನವನಾಗು

ಏನಾದರೂ ಆಗು ಮೊದಲು ಮಾನವನಾಗು says a kannada poem. We all need to know that and remember that phrase always. Whether it is IS or Sanathana sanstha, do these people not agree that we are all children of God? And if they agree, do they ever think about why HE  would want some of his children to be killed by other children? Did you know that the founder of this Sanstha was a hypnotist earlier and people have filed a case against him saying he uses hypnosis to convince people to join the organization and perpetrate violent acts? We the common men and women need to think about this.  Should we say that Hindu terrorism is justifiable because of the presence of muslim terrorism? And don't we want to become good humans first? With little bit of tolerance?
