In today's TOI Jug Surayya has written a piece on how America's udhar will have effect on all of us. But what about our own udhar. You will get calls from various banks offering you loans so frequently. It is as if they will be very sad, if you do not take loan from them. Then if you do not pay back the loan, the same bank will send goons to your house.
Banks are not the only ones to blame. There is also this new consumerism. We see a new gadget in our friend's/colleague's/relative's house. We want it. If we do not have LCD tv/micro wave/air conditioner/washing machine/sedan car, what will people say? They will say we are so poor/cheap/canjoos. So we have to buy that gadget. It does not matter, if we have to use emi or bank loan or some other loan.
Earlier I think this was called peer pressure and was a problem with kids and teenagers. Now everyone is affected by it.
So what we do. We take udhar and buy this thing, buy that thing and we are having party. But one fine day we realize that we have so much loan that we will not be able to repay it in our lifetime. Then we hang ourselves.
Now who is the culprit here? Loan ? People who lend us? Or our own greed?
