He is crafty. He is smooth and he knows how to look good in every one's eyes. He appoints every position in his government personally, no matter how small or large the position. And makes certain that he is surrounded by loyal people. The moment he suspects a minute amount of disloyalty, he sacks them. His ministers are all mostly incompetent. But if there is any unpopular actions which may make people unhappy, like increasing the taxes, he blames and scolds the minister who is supposed to be in charge. So people always say that the emperor is so kind , but the finance minister or some other minister who is corrupt and causing us all the misery.
But thus he rules the country and leading a happy life. It does not matter that people are starving in northern parts of the country where there are frequent droughts. It is good for people to starve, because if people are properly fed and happy, they think of all disloyal thoughts and try some conspiracies against the emperor.
But he does one small mistake though. He sends bright kids from his country to foreign universities to study. These students return and start getting ideas in their head. They ask how can emperor and his cronies lead such a luxurious life when people are dying of starvation. Gradually others join these students and bit by bit revolution has started.
First conspiracy against the emperor, is handled very effectively by the emperor. The conspirators are, at least one of them is hung in a public place. The others kill themselves before they are caught.
Next the emperor replaces all his ministers one by one by lower category people from the most interior parts of the country who have no inkling about the palace and who have no one in the palace except emperor. This method he thinks, these people will not form a group and plot a conspiracy against him.
But no one can stop the revolution, once it has started. It will always take victims it has to take. The emperor.
But the changes to the palace and the emperor which happen are so drastic, one can not imagine.
So as usual will I say a sad book or a great book or a must read book? No I just say, I liked the book. Very much. And also the new method is narration.
