Socrates was a Greek philosopher who laid the foundations for modern western philosophy.
But he was punished with death sentence by the government. He was asked to drink poison and he did so. Instead of trying to escape from the prison, his followers suggested it and were willing to help him. But no, he accepted the punishment and drank the poison.
Now let us come to the reason or his crime. His crime was impiety and spoiling the minds of young people.
In those days, in Greece, people believed in multiple Gods and these Gods were not exactly benevolent and not very omniscient. But our Socrates thought that Gods should be benevolent, truthful, authoritative, and wise.
So he did not believe in the Gods citizens believed. And so was executed.
So can I say "religion - causing the deaths of intellectuals since before Christ era. "
