Pan card circus

This may read like a Hindi comedy film.

I had my pan card. I needed the details for my android market. When I just verified the details in the income tax website, just to be sure, I realized that the department calls me as Hegde Usha where my name is Hegde and family name is Usha. This initiated the circus.
I, self proclaimed computer expert searched a site, (in fact it is nsdl site ) where I can apply online and make payment of some 97 rupees from debit card. That step was not so difficult. Then I posted the acknowledgement along with my photo and copy of previous pan card and xerox of my passport as proof of my identity. But I think when printing the acknowledgement, I printed the entire page in A4 sheet which caused the acknowledgement to be shrunk.

For fifteen days, I did not get any news. That is nothing new, considering the number of applications they may be getting. Then one day, I got an email from them saying there is a problem with my photo, and it is not of the proper size which is 3.5 cm by 2.5 cm. They asked me to resend the photo. I measured the pp size photo for 2.5 cm height and cut it and resent it. I waited for another fifteen days and called their helpline. She is saying the photo I sent second time is not proper as it is cut. She helpfully asked me to the scan the original photo and send it to them via email.

Next I got another email saying that a discrepancy is found in my pan card, my father's name is not matching. I had included my grandfather's name in the original pan card  and had forgotten to include it in the new application.

But by that time, I was losing patience, and went in search of PAN agents. I located one Bajaj capital in Rajajinagar. I showed them my acknowledgement and asked whether they can help me with this online application. They told it is better for me go to UTI office near Ulsoor police station and talk to them directly.

So the next trip was to UTI office in Ulsoor. The man sitting at the counter heard my story and told to me give a fresh application. I took xerox of passport, and old pan card, and gave a new application hoping that physical application may not create these many problems.

A week later I got mail, this time snail mail mentioning the error in my father's name. I just ignored it and kept quiet. Two days later I got an email saying that the application is processed and the new pan card is dispatched. Next day I got another post which was similar to the previous letter.

Yesterday a man from courier office called asking for land mark to my house, mentioning that my pan card has come. He never turned up yesterday but came today and gave me new pan card. After receiving the card, I verified and made sure that my name is properly listed in income tax website.

Now what may happen because of another application given in UTI office I do not know.  Now I have 2 pan cards in front of me and I may end up having third one.

I had heard that getting things done from government departments is tough. But I was not prepared for such a big adventure.

Hair care and me ??

I delayed writing this post for I was not sure whether I am entitled to write this post. If I put my photo along, I should also add that I do not use Dove shampoo, so that it will serve as a warning to people , if they don't use a proper shampoo, their hair might also look like mine :-( :-( :-( Things (on my head) were not this bad always. I had long black and reasonably thick hair, nicely plaited, when I was a child. In fact I would be sitting on my plaits - they were so long. And to top it all, one of relatives used to say " you say you will be taller and your hair will say it will be longer" or something like that. (Now I have ended up 5.2 ft  and my hair also short sob....) Back then, how did I nourish my hair?I did not do much in fact. But mere paas maa thi. She would religiously oil my hair - everyday. But not soak my head in oil. She would just put half a teaspoon of oil to my head. Then brush my hair nicely and put 2 tight plaits before sending me to school. T...

Danuvettiddu

We Hegdes from Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Shimoga districts of Karnataka belong to a brahmin sub sect called Havyaka Brahmins. We have some traditions of our own, a language of our own - which is slightly different from kannada. But I am not an authority on the subject, nor have I read any book on comparative analysis of Karnataka brahmin traditions. And as most modern secular Hindus I find it more amusing to make fun of our traditions rather than celebrating them - may be because I do not understand it completely. I attended a marriage yesterday. So let us talk about few of rituals in this marriage ceremony. On the previous day of the marriage called Naandi - which means beginning of any good thing. The groom will wear a simple dress, and a wooden footwear (since we can't conjure up wooden paduka so easily, he will wear foot-wear made from dried skin of areca flower) and with a sack on his shoulder, will declare that  he will go to Kashi. Here he is saying, he wants to...
