Marriage is an institution. Like any other institution, it has its own set of rules and regulations and drawbacks. But for the bride most often, this institution is more like a prison. She leaves everything behind, her loved family, friends, her hometown with a stranger. And she will be under the illusions that this stranger will fill her with so much love, that she can forget everything and start a completely new life. That will not happen sadly. As the relation becomes old and the initials passion wears away, only thing she is left with is a huge void.
She tries to fill this void with children, their upbringing, home, its maintenance. She tries to build her own nest. Again the children will grow up and leave the nest. And the woman is left with an empty heart and home. She does not belong anywhere. Husband says the house is his, all the belongings are his as he has paid for them. Parents tell her that their home is not hers any more, her home is her husband's.
I am reading the first book of Shashi Deshapande's "Dark holds no terror". The book is so real and so touching.
